Financial Services for Visiting Researchers and Collaborations

The mission of the section FAP-EF-TC is to facilitate the financial administration of research collaborations and visiting researches and their institutes during their stay at CERN. We ensure that expenditure done with external funding is correctly authorised, accounted for, invoiced and that receivable amounts due are collected.

The external funds are placed and managed on so called Third-Party accounts.

What is a Third-Party account?

A Third-Party account is a CERN budget code dedicated to External Funds managed at CERN on
behalf of and for the benefit of the demanding Institution or Collaboration.

Team Accounts should be used exclusively for professional activities in the framework of
collaboration work in a CERN experiment executed on the CERN premises

Information about bank fees.

In August 2019, a change in banking processes for payments issued by CERN has resulted in a modification of the bank fees supported by some recipients of payments processed by claims.

This change concerns only payments in CHF to a bank account outside Switzerland. Payments in CHF to a CHF Swiss bank account and in EUR to a EUR bank account in the SEPA area* are not subject to these changes.

After investigating the reasons, the FAP Department confirms that these bank fees are not charged by CERN's bank, but rather due to the agreements in place between banks (the recipient's bank may charge bank fees for international transfers, use of an intermediary bank, etc.). They are not related to the country nor to the currency of the recipient's account which may result in an apparent randomness (e.g. a recipient in Germany may have been charged additional fees for a payment in CHF on a EUR account, whereas another one has benefited from a decrease or disappearance). At this stage, we can only advise the recipient to turn to their bank for more details.
